Help with Nausea, Heartburn and Constipation when Expecting
During pregnancy, it is common to experience nausea, vomiting, heartburn, and constipation. But there are ways to help relieve them so that you can continue to lead your active and busy life.
Nausea and Vomiting
About 80% of women experience some nausea or vomiting, especially during the first 16-20 weeks of pregnancy.
Tips to try:
- Eat well-tolerated foods that are palatable
- Eat small, frequent meals — every 2-3 hours
- Don't skip meals to avoid getting very hungry
- Drink between meals rather than with meals
- Rest as much as possible — avoid great fatigue
- Avoid cigarette smoke
Heartburn
About 50% of women are affected by heartburn.
Tips to try:
- Don't eat while lying down.
- Eat small, frequent meals (every 2-3 hours) that are low in fat
- Eat slowly, chewing well
- Drink between meals rather than with meals to avoid having a full stomach
- Avoid spicy foods
Constipation
During pregnancy, constipation can affect up to 38% of women. This could be attributed to physiological changes, insufficient fibre and liquid intake, and decreased physical activity.
Tips to try:
- Drink a warm liquid upon waking in the morning
- Consume fibre-rich foods
- Drink 8-12 cups of liquid a day (including water, milk and juice)
- Remain active (walk, swim, etc.)
- Avoid laxatives
- Go to bathroom as soon as the urge is felt to do so
