Articles and Advice: After Childbirth
Family Matters
Be open about your feelings with close friends, family and especially with your partner. Listen to each other as carefully as you want to be heard. You and your partner have time to grow into your new roles. So be forgiving of each other's shortcomings and attentive to each other's needs - and pregnancy will strengthen the bond you share like nothing else can.
Fathers-to-be
Fatherhood too begins long before the baby's delivery. Being an involved father can be one of the greatest tests of a man's character. It can be frightening and exhilarating all at the same time. So for everyone's sake, including his own, the expectant father should closely be linked to everything that's going on. Involvement and cooperation relieve fear and apprehension, and set the stage for a healthy, loving family.
Tips for dads
Daddy is the best co-pilot!
Dad’s new role really takes off when he cares for baby and lends support to you. Dads will encounter some turbulence along the way, but they’ll always land safely. Give him support and let him know that everything will turn out fine. Encourage him to get involved with the fun stuff and let him know that his love can be shown in many ways, including:
- giving baby baths and bottles
- making the most of changing diapers to “chat” and play with baby
- sharing nighttime care
- going out with baby
- rocking and massaging baby, singing
- getting involved in baby’s medical care
- giving mom special attention
Siblings-to-be
If you already have children, involve them too. You don't want them to worry that they're being left behind. So, to offset later problems like sibling rivalry, reassure your children that they are loved, and involve them in preparations for the baby's arrival.
