Pregnancy: Month 3
Congratulations! You're finishing the first trimester of pregnancy. While morning sickness may start to ease near the end of the month, more changes are on the way.
Here are the topics we'll discuss this month:
What's Happening to Me
- You may gain 1 to 1.5 kg (2 or 3 pounds), your waist and breast size increase, and your nipples and the area around them (areola) begin to darken.
- Your clothes may begin to feel tight around your waist.
- Your uterus may feel like a small lump above your pubic bone. It is softer, rounded, and larger. It crowds the bladder, so you may urinate more often.
- Placenta is growing and more hormones are being produced.
- Vaginal discharge becomes thicker, whiter, and stickier.
- You may be more tired and have less energy.
- Nausea (morning sickness) may still occur and it may be more noticeable in the morning.

What's Happening to My Baby
- Your baby now progresses from an embryo to a fetus.
- He begins to kick, can make a fist, can turn his head, squint, and frown.
- Teeth, lips, and genitals begin to develop. There are 20 buds for future teeth.
- By the end of this month, your baby's organs are formed and most are working, with much development as well as growth yet to occur.
- He is just about 10 cm (4 inches) long and weighs 30 grams (1 ounce).

Things I Need to Do
- Get your prenatal checkup. Ask about any body changes that worry you.
- Eat balanced meals (fruits and vegetables, whole grains, milk, proteins). Drink at least eight glasses of water a day (unless otherwise advised by your doctor).
- Avoid smoking, alcohol and caffeinated drinks. Avoid secondhand smoke.
- Take only medicines prescribed by your doctor.
- Avoid using paints, pesticides, and spray cans.
- Exercise each day by walking, swimming, or biking for 15-30 minutes.
- Share good or bad feelings about having the baby with friends and family.
- Check your budget and begin to set aside money for baby items.
