Articles and Advice: Your Baby 6-12 Months
Flavours and Textures
Flavours and textures between 7 and 9 months
Now that your baby has tasted food from all of the food groups, learning about the flavours and textures will be an important part of mealtime.
Beginning at 7 months, if your baby doesn’t tend to choke, she can eat thicker, lumpier purées made quickly in the blender or mashed with a fork.
Babies love to chew. Be careful though since some foods can cause her to choke.
Cereal
At this age, you should give your child iron-enriched baby cereal each day. You can also serve her soy and mixed cereals.
Around 9 months of age, she should eat enough cereal in the morning, about 125 ml (½ cup), to satisfy her daily needs. You no longer have to feed her cereal at supper.
Vegetables
Your baby already eats some vegetables. Go ahead and make thicker purées. For variety, mix vegetables that she’s already tried.
Around 8 or 9 months, you can cut the vegetables prepared for the rest of the family into small pieces and serve them to her, as long as they have been cooked without salt. Wait until your baby is 9 months old before serving her spinach, turnips and beets.
At 8 or 9 months of age, you can encourage her to eat small pieces of soft foods with her hands, like well-cooked vegetables or ripe or canned fruit. No need to wait until she has teeth; she can chew with her gums.
You can now add new vegetables to her diet: cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, peas, potatoes, corn, Brussel sprouts, avocado, etc.
