Breast milk is best for your baby.

Health Canada, the Canadian Paediatric Society and the Dietitians of Canada recommend that you exclusively breastfeed your baby for the first 6 months and that you continue to breastfeed for up to 2 years or longer along with complementary foods.

A vegetarian pregnancy?

You can follow a vegetarian diet throughout your pregnancy, and with careful planning, you can get all the nutrients you and your baby need.

Make sure to follow a healthy eating plan and keep your protein levels up by eating foods like soy products, dried beans, and peanut butter. You also want to make sure you are getting enough iron from non-meat sources. Make sure to include vitamin C-rich foods to increase iron absorption. Be sure to take a prenatal supplement as prescribed by your doctor.

TIP

Different-coloured fruits and
vegetables have different levels of
vitamins and minerals. As a general
rule, try to vary the types and colours of fruits and
vegetables you
eat every day.
